Are Your Dreams Even Yours? The Hidden Mimetic Desire!

Mimetic Desire: Why You’re Chasing Someone Else’s Dream While Calling It Your Own

“Congratulations! You’ve finally bought the SUV you’ve always wanted.”

Have you?

Or did your neighbor buy one first?

Welcome to the uncomfortable world of Mimetic Desire—a mental model so brutally honest that if it were a Bollywood villain, it would remove its own disguise in the first scene and say, “It was your Instagram feed all along.”

French philosopher René Girard made a claim that sounds almost offensive at first:

“Most of what you desire isn’t your own. You borrowed it.”

Ouch.

Before you angrily close this tab, glance at your Amazon wishlist, LinkedIn feed, or Instagram Explore page.

Still sure every ambition on that list is 100% yours?

Exactly.

🎬 The Greatest Copycat Movie Ever Made… Is Your Life

Imagine a Bollywood script.

Hero loves heroine.

Standard.

Now introduce another hero who also loves her.

Suddenly, she becomes ten times more attractive.

Nothing about her changed.

Only competition did.

That’s Mimetic Desire in action.

We don’t simply imitate what people do.

We imitate what they want.

Humans don’t just catch colds.

We catch ambitions.

📱 Instagram Didn’t Invent FOMO. It Just Gave It 5G Speed.

Ten minutes ago:

“I’m happy with my apartment.”

Five minutes on Instagram:

“I think I need a penthouse with an infinity pool overlooking the Arabian Sea.”

Nothing changed.

Except your comparison.

Social media isn’t just showing lifestyles.

It’s installing desires.

Every swipe whispers:

“You could want this too…”

And your brain politely replies,

“Excellent idea. I’ll pretend it was mine.”

🏏 IPL, Cricket and the Psychology of Borrowed Dreams

Every Indian kid dreams of becoming a cricketer.

Or do they?

Suppose IPL never existed.

Suppose nobody became a celebrity by hitting sixes.

Would millions still dream of lifting a bat?

Some would.

Most wouldn’t.

That’s not criticism.

That’s Girard.

Visibility creates desire.

The brighter the spotlight, the longer the queue becomes.

We don’t just admire winners.

We borrow their goals.

🤖 AI Has Made Mimetic Desire More Dangerous Than Ever

Here’s the twist nobody saw coming.

Artificial Intelligence isn’t merely answering questions anymore.

It’s shaping attention.

Recommendation systems learn what captures human curiosity, then amplify it. The more people interact with certain content, the more similar content gets recommended, reinforcing trends and social comparison.

Every recommendation says:

“People like you also wanted this.”

Netflix.

YouTube.

Instagram.

LinkedIn.

Amazon.

Even AI assistants increasingly personalize suggestions based on patterns.

Convenient?

Absolutely.

Neutral?

Not always.

The algorithm doesn’t ask:

“What fulfills you?”

It asks:

“What keeps you engaged?”

Those aren’t always the same thing.

Many influences for a student

The Indian Dream… Or the Indian Download?

Let’s be honest.

Every Indian family has experienced this conversation.

“What does your son do?”

“Software Engineer.”

“Wah!”

“And yours?”

“He wants to become a wildlife photographer.”

Silence.

The aunties briefly lose network connectivity.

Many of us didn’t choose careers.

We inherited aspiration packages.

Doctor.

Engineer.

MBA.

Government job.

Corporate title.

Corner office.

Luxury SUV.

Weekend brunch.

Goa photos.

Repeat.

It’s almost like society released an annual software update titled:

Version 2026: Everyone Wants The Same Things.

The Wedding Nobody Wanted

Picture this.

One couple wanted a simple ceremony.

Forty guests.

Good food.

Meaningful conversations.

Then someone said:

“But Sharma ji spent ₹75 lakh.”

Suddenly:

Drone cameras.

Five costume changes.

Destination wedding.

Ice sculpture.

Fireworks.

Two thousand guests.

One exhausted bride.

Two stressed parents.

Four years of EMI.

Congratulations.

You didn’t plan a wedding.

You competed in the Social Olympics.

📊 Authentic Desire vs Borrowed Desire

Authentic Desire ❤️Mimetic Desire 🎭
Comes from valuesComes from comparison
QuietLoud
Feels meaningfulFeels urgent
Creates satisfactionCreates endless chasing
Exists without an audienceNeeds spectators
LastsKeeps changing

Think of authentic desire as a tree.

It grows slowly.

Its roots go deep.

Mimetic desire?

It’s fireworks.

Loud.

Beautiful.

Gone before you finish recording it.

Many desires

💼 The LinkedIn Promotion Trap

Imagine this.

You loved your job on Monday.

Tuesday morning, LinkedIn announces:

“Happy to share that I have been promoted to Senior Vice President of Global Strategic Innovation Excellence…”

By lunchtime:

Your perfectly good career suddenly feels like yesterday’s newspaper.

Nothing changed.

Except someone else’s announcement.

Comparison quietly rewrote your ambitions.

Girard would smile knowingly.

Then probably uninstall LinkedIn.

🎥 Bollywood’s Biggest Plot Twist

Bollywood has secretly been teaching Mimetic Desire for decades.

The hero doesn’t always fall in love because of love.

Sometimes he falls in love because someone else is interested.

The rival creates value.

Competition creates attraction.

Even villains understand this.

Humans often desire what other humans desire.

Luxury brands know it.

Influencers know it.

Political campaigns know it.

Algorithms know it.

Now you know it too.

🧠 Why Mimetic Desire Feels So Real

Here’s the frightening part.

Borrowed desires don’t feel borrowed.

They feel deeply personal.

That’s why they’re dangerous.

Your brain doesn’t announce:

“Warning: Installing someone else’s life goals.”

It quietly updates your internal operating system overnight.

Tomorrow morning you wake up believing:

“I’ve always wanted this.”

Maybe.

Maybe not.

That’s the trap.

📉 The Success That Feels Empty

Have you ever met someone who achieved everything they dreamed of…

…and still looked strangely disappointed?

The title arrived.

The money arrived.

The car arrived.

The applause arrived.

But fulfillment missed the flight.

Because they completed someone else’s checklist.

It’s like training for years to win a marathon—

Only to discover at the finish line that you never liked running.

That’s the hidden tax of Mimetic Desire.

You don’t lose because you fail.

You lose because you succeed at the wrong dream.

📌 Pause for 30 Seconds

Look around your room.

Pick one expensive thing you own.

Ask yourself:

Would I still want this if nobody else ever saw it?

Don’t answer quickly.

The silence that follows is where self-awareness begins.
