The Lindy Effect: Why the 2,000-Year-Old Book on Your Shelf May Outlive the Productivity App You Downloaded Last Tuesday?

You know that friend.

The one who discovers a “life-changing” productivity app every Thursday.

By Monday, they’ve become an evangelist.

“Bro, this app uses AI agents, neuro-adaptive workflows, quantum prioritization, blockchain accountability, and probably astrology.”

By Friday?

They’re back to forgetting birthdays and missing deadlines.

Meanwhile, your grandmother—armed with a steel dabba, a handwritten grocery list, and absolutely zero subscriptions—has somehow run an entire household efficiently for forty years.

No app updates.

No beta testing.

No premium plan.

Just results.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Lindy Effect.

The mental model that quietly asks:

If something has worked for decades—or centuries—shouldn’t we at least ask why before replacing it with the shiny new thing?

And in an era where AI launches faster than Bollywood remakes, that question may be more valuable than ever.

The Deli That Predicted the Future

The Lindy Effect gets its name from Lindy’s Delicatessen, a famous New York restaurant where comedians gathered during Broadway’s golden age.

They noticed something odd.

A show running for 10 days?

Likely to disappear soon.

A show running for 100 days?

Likely to survive another 100.

Time wasn’t weakening it.

Time was strengthening the evidence for its survival.

Later, mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot formalized the observation, and Nassim Nicholas Taleb transformed it into one of modern thinking’s most powerful mental models.

Simply put:

For non-perishable things—ideas, books, technologies, traditions—the longer they’ve survived, the longer they’re likely to continue surviving.

Humans age.

Ideas age differently.

Some grow stronger simply because they survived.

Time becomes the world’s harshest interviewer.

And unlike HR, time actually asks useful questions.

Greatest Lindy Laboratory

India is basically Lindy headquarters disguised as a country.

Think about it.

What has survived?

  • Yoga
  • Ayurveda-inspired dietary principles
  • Test cricket
  • Joint family wisdom
  • The pressure of relatives asking, “Shaadi kab karoge?”
  • Homemade khichdi
  • The concept of removing footwear before entering homes
  • Bargaining
  • Chai discussions solving national problems

Some of these are excellent.

Some mildly traumatic.

But all reveal something important:

Human nature changes slower than technology.

And that’s exactly where Lindy shines.

The Great Indian Lindy Scorecard

The new gets attention.

The Lindy gets results.

Cricket Already Explained This

In India, we worship T20.

Fast.

Explosive.

Instagram-friendly.

But when the pitch cracks and pressure rises?

Who do we trust?

Test match temperament.

Discipline.

Judgment.

Patience.

The same fundamentals that survived generations.

Because flashy talent wins highlights.

Lindy habits win careers.

Anyone can hit sixes when life serves half-volleys.

Lindy shines when life starts bowling reverse swing.

The Productivity Graveyard

I knew someone who spent two years chasing productivity systems.

Bullet journaling.

Second Brain.

Third Brain.

Atomic something.

Digital detox.

AI copilots.

Calendar blocking.

Color-coded dashboards.

He optimized his productivity system so beautifully that he forgot to produce anything.

His Notion workspace looked like NASA’s control center.

His actual work looked like a government office during lunch break.

Eventually, defeated, he returned to:

  • A notebook.
  • Three priorities.
  • Morning planning.

Embarrassingly simple.

Shockingly effective.

Older than electricity.

Still undefeated.

That’s Lindy.

🤖 But What About AI? Isn’t New Better?

Here’s where people misunderstand Lindy.

Lindy isn’t anti-technology.

It’s anti-amnesia.

Modern surgery?

Better.

Modern medicine?

Better.

GPS?

Definitely better.

Nobody wants a surgeon saying:

“We believe in tradition. Bring the leeches.”

The Lindy Effect doesn’t reject innovation.

It asks:

Which problems are technological?

And which are human?

Technology evolves rapidly.

Human psychology evolves slowly.

AI and humans

People still:

  • Procrastinate.
  • Fall in love.
  • Seek meaning.
  • Fear rejection.
  • Crave belonging.
  • Overthink WhatsApp blue ticks.

Ancient humans worried about being excluded from the tribe.

Modern humans worry about being excluded from the family wedding WhatsApp group.

Different interface.

Same operating system.

AI’s Biggest Blind Spot Is Also Lindy’s Biggest Opportunity

Recent discussions around AI emphasize something fascinating:

As AI automates knowledge work, uniquely human and durable skills become increasingly valuable.

Nassim Taleb himself recently highlighted the resilience of “Lindy skills”—nursing, cooking, gardening, plumbing, and caregiving—as areas less vulnerable to AI disruption.

Translation?

The future may reward people who combine:

Ancient wisdom + Modern tools.

Not either/or.

Both.

The doctor using AI diagnostics and human empathy.

The teacher using AI tutoring and timeless storytelling.

The entrepreneur using automation and relationship-building.

AI may write faster.

Trust still compounds slowly.

The Lindy Curve

Imagine this graph.

Human Life

Great Ideas

The Bhagavad Gita?

Still relevant.

Meditation?

Still useful.

Test cricket?

Still dramatic.

Your cousin’s NFT investment advice from 2022?

Let’s not discuss it.

Why Google Loves Lindy More Than Ever

The AI era has changed SEO.

But not in the way most people think.

Google continues emphasizing:

  • Helpful content
  • Experience
  • Expertise
  • Authority
  • Trustworthiness

(E-E-A-T).

Even Google’s guidance on generative AI warns against producing scaled content without genuine value.

Ironically:

As AI floods the internet with average content…

Original human experience becomes Lindier.

Scarcer.

More trusted.

More valuable.

In an ocean of algorithmic soup, authenticity becomes premium cuisine.

AI or Cyborg?

Bollywood’s Lindy Problem

Bollywood occasionally behaves like that overconfident MBA intern.

“People liked one action movie.”

“Excellent.”

“Let’s make 37 identical ones.”

But then something timeless returns.

A simple story.

A relatable family drama.

A song everyone sings at weddings.

A character audiences recognize from their own lives.

Technology changes.

Emotion doesn’t.

People still laugh.

Cry.

Dance badly at sangeets.

Lindy wins again.

The Lindy Filter: Four Questions That Could Save You Years

Whenever you encounter a shiny new idea, ask:

1. How long has this existed?

Ten days?

Ten years?

Ten centuries?

2. Have thoughtful people kept using it?

Popularity isn’t enough.

Durability among careful practitioners matters.

3. Does it solve an ancient human problem?

Attention.

Trust.

Love.

Health.

Meaning.

These problems don’t expire.

4. Why didn’t its competitors survive?

The graveyard teaches.

If nobody remembers them, ask why.

A Warning Before You Become a Vintage Philosopher

Lindy is not:

“Old equals good.”

Plenty of terrible ideas survived.

The Lindy Effect simply gives older ideas the benefit of investigation.

Not blind obedience.

Use it as a tilt.

Not a law.

Question everything.

Including Lindy itself.

Taleb humorously notes that Lindy itself has survived long enough to become rather Lindy.

Which is either brilliantly recursive or slightly annoying.

Possibly both.

Old and new

The Hundred-Year Test

Here’s a practical exercise.

Take one belief guiding your life.

Career.

Money.

Relationships.

Health.

Ask:

Would a wise person from 1926 recognize this advice as sensible?

If yes:

Hold it tightly.

If no:

Ask another question.

Is this genuinely better—or merely newer?

Because novelty often wears confidence like cheap perfume.

Lindy wears quiet competence.

Final Thought: Don’t Trade Ancient Wisdom for Push Notifications

The internet trains us to worship the latest.

New update.

New trend.

New guru.

New hack.

But time whispers something different.

The recipe your grandmother used.

Grandmother running household efficiently

The principles your best teacher repeated.

The friend who consistently shows up.

The notebook beside your bed.

The values that survived civilizations.

These things endured because reality tested them.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Time has no marketing department.

No affiliate links.

No sponsored posts.

No influencer discount codes.

It simply asks:

“Still useful?”

If the answer remains yes after decades or centuries…

Pay attention.

Because while everyone else is chasing the next shiny object, you might be holding something rare.

Something robust.

Something beautifully unfashionable.

Something Lindy.

And in a world addicted to updates, perhaps the most radical act is remembering that some truths don’t need improving.

They just need practicing.
